Year after year, SPARK FX presents some of the most creative and innovative work in VFX for both film and television. Our mission is to foster community, ignite the imagination, highlight leading artistic and technological advancements within Vancouver’s visual effects industry through our signature events. SPARK FX showcases Vancouver’s talent providing the international community with an opportunity to learn more and experience British Columbia as an animation, visual effects, and technology destination. Due to the ongoing pandemic, SPARK FX will be presented online March 4 – 14, 2021 through an all-access pass which includes live and pre-recorded presentations, Q&A and VFX technical sessions.

Streams

SPARK FX 2021 will consist of 5 streams to highlight different categories in VFX instead of an overall conference theme. SPARK FX 2021 features the creative teams behind popular productions such as The Monster Hunter, Bridgeton, The Expanse, The Umbrella Academy, Star Trek: Discovery, to technical VFX sessions, a deep dive into Reel-Time, the advances of Artificial Intelligence, and anniversary celebrations for films such Raiders Lost Ark, DragonHeart, Space Jam, and The Fast & the Furious.

Career Fair

Due to the pandemic, we won’t be hosting a career fair this year. Instead, we are planning online targeted recruiting events with several studios in the coming weeks. Make sure to join our mailing list for details, and check our Event Calendar.

Don’t miss the celebration! Join us as we reminisce movies that sparked the imagination in us, whether it was the thrill of speed, adventurous discoveries, or creatures that became friends. Another special feature includes Blizzard Entertainment who celebrates 30 years, a milestone anniversary. Presenters journey down memory lane with untold stories, the challenges, pioneering techniques not yet discovered, and the passion that propelled VFX forward.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN VFX

Join us at SPARK FX this year for the AI IN VFX stream, where we dive into the different ways that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in the VFX industry. This stream will showcase various phases of the production pipeline which includes how AI can be used to improve the workflow of artists and filmmakers, to allow them to produce higher quality content in a faster/cost-effective way and remain competitive in an ever changing market.

Examples of topics include the use of AI as a tool to help artists with photo-realistic human face generation and control, cloth simulations, character rigging and animation, augmented reality VFX, and even asking the AI itself to be creative.

MEET THE MASTERS

This isn’t your average ‘tips and tricks!’ These lectures are designed for the professional compositor and covers common gaps in standard Compositing training. Our goal is to elevate any compositor through awareness, managing CG, how the math actually works, selective stylization and ultimately, understanding your role in the bigger picture.

Join us for the lectures and a panel about Compositing with our industry professionals.

This stream is all about the 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When, Why. The creative teams from top studio’s present on the creation of some of the most thrilling, dynamic films and television series to date. Featured in this stream are popular productions such as The Umbrella Academy, The Expanse, Star Trek: Discovery, Monster Hunter and more. It’s not just the “talks” there will be some pretty cool clips and techniques shared too.
