SPARK ANIMATION is Western Canada's largest celebration of animation, offering a dynamic mix of screenings, insightful Q&As, talks, and masterclasses led by industry experts. The festival also features community events and an Artist Alley, creating a space for creative professionals and fans to connect, learn, and be inspired by the best in global animation.

- CONFIRMATIONS: Your payment receipt IS your confirmation. There will be no other confirmation email and no digital tickets.

- WILL-CALL: Your tickets will be available at the main registration desk during Festival hours. Please, have your photo ID and receipt (digital or printed) ready.
- TRANSFERS: You may transfer your reservation to someone else for most events. Please allow at least 48 hours. Email [email protected] with your receipt number, full name, and phone number. Also, add the full name of your guest, with their phone number and email address. A volunteer will assist with your transfer. Excluded: registrations for the Career Fair and Artist Alley. Based on Kid Koala’s award-winning graphic novel, Space Cadet is a dialogue-free animated film that tells the tender story of Celeste, a young girl, and the first-generation Guardianbot who raises her with love and care.
While Celeste trains at the astronaut academy and her mother serves on a mission in space, Robot becomes her constant companion. Their bond deepens into something like family. But when Celeste grows up and embarks on her own voyage among the stars, Robot is left behind. As Celeste discovers new life and joy on distant planets, Robot faces solitude, reliving cherished memories of their time together even as his own systems begin to fail.
The film features an original score by Kid Koala, with additional songs by Karen O and Mariana “Ladybug” Vieira of Digable Planets.
Screening will include a Q&A with director Kid Koala.

100 Meters follows Togashi, a track star who is born to run. As a kid, he is naturally gifted and wins every 100-meter race without effort. BIOGRAPHIES
Benjamin Hendricks is a Visual Effects Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently supervising production of the animated feature, KPop Demon Hunters, for Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix.
With almost two decades of industry experience, Hendricks has served as Compositing, Lighting and CG Supervisor on numerous features, including: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Sea Beast, Vivo, Mulan, and the Academy Award®-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Additional Imageworks credits include: Alice Through the Looking Glass, Pixels, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Smurfs 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Beowulf, G-Force, and Alice in Wonderland.
Prior to Imageworks, Hendricks worked at Method Studios, supervising teams on Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and Transformers 3. He also worked at DreamWorks Animation on Shrek, Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third.
Hendricks earned an MFA in Animation from USC and a bachelor’s degree in Cinema, with an emphasis in Animation, from San Francisco State University. Prior to this, he was a major in Biology and Chemistry at Caltech.
Brad Bird is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and voice actor. He has created work in both animation and live-action, and is known for: The Incredibles franchise, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Tomorrowland.
Chris’ talents as a CG Supervisor, author, filmmaker, and musician are a testament to his all-around creative personality. As a leading CG Supervisor for animated features and live action films for the past two decades, his career credits are extensive, from Open Season to Arthur Christmas and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
A key member of the animation team, Chris’ supervision and background in CG and FX supervision was integral to the creation of Cinesite’s 20 minutes of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Introducing new tools and methods to the pipeline provided the compositing artists with the necessary 2D FX needed for them to create important aspects of the film’s distinctive look.

Clara Chan is a visual effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks with over two decades of industry experience. In 2001, Chan joined Imageworks as a technical director in the lighting department. Her credits include the animated feature Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the Academy Award®-nominated Over the Moon, first three Hotel Transylvania films, Storks, The Emoji Movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Amazing Spider-Man, Cats & Dogs 2, G-Force, Beowulf, the Academy Award-nominated Monster House, The Polar Express, and Stuart Little 2.
Earlier in her career, Clara worked as a software engineer at NASA Jet Propulsion Lab. Clara earned a B.S. in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree in visualization sciences from Texas A&M University.
Clara is also directing and producing an animated short film in her spare time, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
In her career at Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios, Claudia Chung Sanii has spent 20 years melding cutting-edge technology with the characters, costumes and artistry of Academy Award® winning films.
Returning to Pixar in 2020, Chung Sanii served as Visual Effects Supervisor on Pixar’s most recent original feature film Elio, which released in theatres in the summer of 2025. Before that, she was Head of Characters on Disney’s Academy Award®-winning feature Encanto and Simulation Supervisor on Academy Award®-winning feature Zootopia. She served as Simulation Supervisor on Academy Award®-winning feature Brave, leading the adoption of Pixar’s Presto animation software and Taz hair simulation system into production, both critical to Merida’s signature red long curly hair. She is also credited in tailoring, simulation and rendering on Academy Award®-winning features Frozen, Big Hero 6, Up, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo.
Chung Sanii was influenced early in life by her father, who was an electric engineer, and her mother, who was an artist. Even then, she was fascinated by the elegant designs of the magnets, wires and circuit boards that were the guts of computers and clocks.
In the collaborative nature of feature animation, Chung Sanii finds delight in the moments when design, science and technology mix, whether easily or with conviction to create something magical.
Dennis Hoffman, a veteran of the visual effects industry, has held numerous positions in the film industry and is currently providing services through The Hoffman Group, including business consulting, VFX production and bidding. Prior to his current position, Dennis has held positions as the President of Stargate Studios Vancouver, as well as the Managing Director and Senior Vice President of Framestore in Montreal. While at Framestore, Hoffman oversaw numerous projects including Paddington, a Studio Canal project, Mowgli, legend of the Jungle a Netflix Production and Pan, a Warner Bros/RatPac-Dune Production.
Hoffman has held executive positions at several other VFX companies including Digital Domain, Deluxe owned VFX facilities, Method and CIS, as well as Cinesite and Dream Quest Images. Over the years, Hoffman has been involved in numerous projects recognized for their visual effects including, Flags of Our Fathers and Changeling (VES- Best Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Film), as well as Oscar nominee Mighty Joe Young, VES nominee Invictus and Earth 2, an Emmy award winner for Best VFX.
Hoffman is a founding member of the Visual Effects Society, and currently serves on both its International Board, as well as the board of the Vancouver section. In addition, Hoffman is a board member of the Spark CG Society which holds Animation and VFX conferences and film festivals in Vancouver. Dennis holds an MFA in Film from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Political Science/International Affairs from the George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Originally from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Denver Jackson is a self-taught animator and visual effects artist who got his start making films in high school before emigrating to Canada with his parents. As a filmmaker, he leans heavily on the fantastical while still being grounded by real-world characters and situations.
He works in both live-action and animated films, blending the conventions of both mediums to create his own unique style, and is known to write, direct, film, edit, and animate almost entirely on his own. The Wishing Jar (2016) has screened around the world, including at three Academy Award-qualifying festivals and won Best Animated Film at both San Diego Comic Con International Film Festival and Heartland Film Festival, while his first animated short film Cloudrise (2013) cut through the 400 hours of content uploaded every minute on Vimeo to become a prestigious Vimeo Staff Pick. He wrote, directed and animated three feature-length projects from a webseries (Esluna: The First Monolith) to two feature films (Esluna: The Crown of Babylon and Esluna: The Worlds Divide).
The Crown of Babylon premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival, while The Worlds Divide went on to screen at Annecy, Sitges and the Ottawa Animation Film Festival.
Dylan began his career at Pixar Animation Studios in 1995, where he animated on A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., and The Incredibles. He served as Directing Animator on Toy Story 2 and as Supervising Animator on both Finding Nemo and >Ratatouille.
In 2009, Dylan became the founding Creative Director of Pixar Canada. He played a key role in building the Vancouver studio from the ground up, assembling a world-class team and leading the creation of the high-quality short films that carried Pixar’s signature artistry and storytelling.
After two decades at Pixar, Dylan joined Paramount Animation in 2014, where he directed a feature animated film. Returning to Vancouver in 2018, he joined Blackbird Interactive, where he spearheaded real-time CG filmmaking initiatives and brought a high-end cinematic aesthetic to the Minecraft universe. During this time, Dylan also directed a campaign that earned four Clio Awards, further cementing his reputation for combining high artistry with innovation.
Today, Dylan is focused on developing original IP and innovative approaches to filmmaking, while actively exploring future opportunities to bring his bold creative leadership to a studio environment.
Mingjue Helen Chen is a visual development artist and production designer currently based in Los Angeles. She graduated from the Academy of Art University in 2010 and has been working in the animation industry since, with clients like Walt Disney Animation Studios, Warner Bros. Studios, Paramount Animation, Netflix Animation, and Sony Pictures Animation. Notable projects include Frankenweenie, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Wish Dragon, Raya and the Last Dragon, and most recently served as Production Designer for Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters.

Justin is a dedicated Canadian production coordinator with a passion for animation. His journey in the animation industry began as an intern in human resources, and by 2020, he had been hired as a production coordinator. Throughout his career, Justin has collaborated closely with teams of talented artists across various stages of the animation pipeline. With unfaltering energy, as the wind in his sails, he hopes to support all artists who partake in the intricate process of crafting animated masterpieces.
Justin’s production experience includes projects like Chip and Potato and Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City. Currently serving as a production coordinator at Animal Logic, he helped coordinate artists in the production of the film Leo. Additionally, Justin contributes his time and skills as the Volunteer Coordinator for Spark CG, showcasing his commitment to the animation community.
Katie Shanahan is a Canadian director, cartoonist and storyboard artist with animation credits including Centaurworld (2021), Fairly OddParents, and several films and series in the Mattel universe. Her original comic work has garnered critical acclaim, earning her two Joe Shuster Award nominations. Loving all things whimsical and weird, Katie felt right at home on The Twits, and is delighted to be a co-director on the animated feature film.
Kid Koala is a world-renowned performer, composer, theatre producer, and visual artist. Starting as a scratch DJ in 1994, he quickly gained a cult following for his virtuosic skills and genre-bending style, blending turntables with analog machines and visual storytelling. He has released eight solo albums on Ninja Tune and Arts & Crafts, toured with acts like Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and the Beastie Boys, and collaborated with Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, and the Afiara String Quartet.
His innovative live shows—ranging from Vinyl Vaudeville to Nufonia Must Fall and The Storyville Mosquito—combine music, animation, film, and interactive art into unforgettable multimedia experiences. He has contributed to film scores including Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Looper, and created music for the NFB, Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, and designer Dries Van Noten.
Also an author of award-winning graphic novels “Nufonia Must Fall” and “Space Cadet,” Kid Koala has toured six continents. He lives in Montreal with his wife and two daughters.
Space Cadet, an animated feature based on his graphic novel, is his feature film debut. The film premiered at the Berlinale and had its North American Premiere at TIFF 50.
Elizabeth “Liz” Bernard is a Senior Animation Supervisor at Digital Domain with 20+ feature film credits. Recently, she supervised animation for The Electric State and the Minecraft Movie. She also worked on Disney’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, earning a nomination for the Visual Effects Society’s Best Character Animation Award. Liz has a passion for animating a diverse range of characters, including photorealistic humans, animals, robots, and fantastical creatures.
Malcon Pierce (Artistic Director) makes his directing debut on Versa, following a distinguished 16-year Disney career as an animator (Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen 2 and Oscar® winners Big Hero 6 and Encanto, among others), animation supervisor (on the Oscar®-winning Frozen and Oscar®-nominated Moana), and head of animation (Oscar®-nominated Raya and the Last Dragon). In 2022, he was named artistic director for the newly launched Vancouver location of Walt Disney Animation Studios, where he helped to create the 2024 blockbuster feature, Moana 2, and continues to contribute to a wide range of Disney Animation features.
Marina has been writing and discussing film for over 15 years, first on a personal blog, followed by a decade-long tenure on the now retired Row Three. In 2008, she joined the writing staff at Quiet Earth, becoming Editor-In-Chief in 2014, a role she still holds. Over the years, she has also produced and hosted a number of podcasts including Before the Dawn, a long-running podcast on the Twilight franchise, Girls on Pop, a podcast on film and popular entertainment from women’s perspective and After the Credits, bi-monthly film podcast with nearly 300 episodes.
Marina is a member of ACM and ACM SIGGRAPH, the Online Film Critics Society, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and the Visual Effects Society. She is the President of Spark CG Society and the Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH chapter. She has also served on juries for several film festivals including DOXA, St. Louis International Film Festival, and the Whistler Film Festival. She joined the Spark CG Society in 2014.

Award-winning author, historian, filmmaker, educator, musician and more, Mindy Johnson’s creative accomplishments reflect the diversity of her talents and experience. A leading expert on women’s roles in animation and film history, Mindy writes and speaks on early cinema, animation, women’s history, and creativity.
A recipient of the prestigious ASIFA-Hollywood June Foray Award, given to individuals who've made a significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation. Mindy's honours also include the Academy Film Scholar Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences/Oscars.org, and the ASIFA-Hollywood AEF Grant for continued research and writing on the contributions of the earliest women within our collective animated past. With several forthcoming volumes underway, Mindy's groundbreaking discoveries continue to cast light on the invisible narrative of women’s presence within the first century of the motion picture industry. Her latest landmark breakthrough is the discovery of Bessie Mae Kelley and her surviving films believed to be the earliest surviving hand-drawn animation, animated and directed by a woman, forever busting the myth of women no longer present at the dawn of the animation industry.

Mindy teaches film and animation courses in the Los Angeles area, including a first-of-its-kind course on the history of women in animation, based on her continued ground-breaking research, at CalArts — California Institute of the Arts, in Los Angeles, and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
Nicola Lavender is a VFX supervisor and the Director, CG Supervision at Sony Pictures Imageworks with over two decades of experience working on live-action and animated features. She most recently supervised the animated comedy adventure In Your Dreams for Netflix.
Lavender previously served as CG supervisor on the Academy Award®-nominated animated feature The Mitchells vs. The Machines, overseeing the look of the picture team, which was responsible for crafting the stylized look of the movie. She served in a similar capacity on the animated features Smallfoot and The Angry Birds Movie.
Lavender joined Imageworks in 2005 and has worked on numerous projects, including the Academy Award®-nominated Surf’s Up and Alice in Wonderland, I Am Legend, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania and Edge of Tomorrow.
Prior to Imageworks, Lavender served as a technical director at Framestore on the features Underworld, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Lavender is a graduate of Bournemouth University with a degree in computer animation and visualization.
Academy Award® nominee Phil Johnston is one of today’s most versatile storytellers in both live action and animation. He co-created the worlds of Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and the Oscar®-winning Zootopia, and his upcoming animated feature, The Twits, marks the first-ever screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book. Featuring voices from Natalie Portman, Emilia Clarke, Margo Martindale, and Johnny Vegas, the film premieres on Netflix later this year.
Johnston’s other credits include co-writing and co-directing Ralph Breaks the Internet, co-writing The Brothers Grimsby, and scripting Cedar Rapids, which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination. He is also developing a limited series adaptation of Parasite for HBO with Bong Joon-ho and Adam McKay, as well as a feature based on A Confederacy of Dunces.
Before filmmaking, Johnston worked as a journalist, earning three Emmy® Awards. He studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and film directing at Columbia University. He now lives in Vancouver with his family and is active with The Empathy Project, including co-writing (with Delia Ephron) the animated short The Elephant in the Waiting Room, which explores how empathy can help mitigate bias in medicine.
Sebastian Kapijimpanga is Head of Character Animation at Sony Pictures Imageworks with over two decades of industry experience. He most recently led the animation team on the Netflix feature In Your Dreams.
Kapijimpanga previously supervised animation on Over the Moon, the live-action Ghostbusters reboot, The Emoji Movie, The Smurfs 2, and The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol. He also served as lead animator for Hotel Transylvania, The Smurfs, and G-Force.
Kapijimpanga’s other Imageworks credits include: Alice in Wonderland, which was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects, I Am Legend, Beowulf, Surf's Up, Monster House, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Before joining Imageworks, Kapijimpanga worked as a Character Animator on Everyone’s Hero while at IDT. He was also one of four principal animators on the film Ryan, which won an Academy Award® for Best Animated Short in 2004.
In 2001, Kapijimpanga graduated from "Max the Mutt" Animation School in Toronto, Canada, with a diploma in classical animation. He furthered his education by studying 3D digital animation at Seneca College, where he earned a certificate in 2002.
Todd Demong is a Director, Head of Story, and Story Artist. He started on Ed, Edd, and Eddy (1999-2008), staying in TV until he worked on Sausage Party (2016) as Head of Story, and has been in feature animation ever since. He has worked on such titles as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Vivo (2021), and as Head of Story again on The Addams Family (2019).
Most recently, he had his dream gig as Co-Director on the upcoming animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits (Netflix, 2025).
Todd is also a published Comic Book Artist. His work can be found in Hell and Star Wars Tales (Dark Horse Comics), as well as 100 Girls (Arcana Comics) and Undead Justice (undeadjustice.com), being co-creator of the latter two.
Todd currently resides in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife Marta.
As a young child, Willie Ito learned to draw on the pages of Sears catalogues while his family was incarcerated at the Japanese internment camp in Topaz, Utah, during World War II. He then studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles before joining Walt Disney Studios in 1954, where he became Iwao Takamoto’s assistant as an in-betweener on the “Lady” unit of the feature film, Lady and the Tramp, illustrating the movie’s famous spaghetti-eating scene.
Ito then worked alongside legendary animator Chuck Jones at Warner Bros. before joining Hanna-Barbera during the development of The Jetsons. Ito remained at Hanna-Barbera for the next fourteen years, where he worked on layouts and backgrounds for such series as The Flintstones and The Yogi Bear Show, and designed characters like the title characters from Hong Kong Phooey and Goober and the Ghost Chasers. In 2021, Willie was honoured with an Annie Award — the industry’s highest honour — for his legendary animation career. 2025 marks the debut of his latest animated adventure, Hello Maggie, a landmark story about a young Japanese boy during World War II incarceration, based on Ito’s book. Willie continues to draw and speak to audiences about his career at the leading animation studios.
