In the world of animation, the films we love stay with us. We remember the laughter, the fears, the challenges, and joys of characters brought to life on the screen through the wonders of CG to stop-motion. SPARK ANIMATION celebrates the impact of animation on today’s entertainment industry and honours the diversity of films and techniques in the field.

Film Festival: October 25–28, 2018

Our festival team has scoured all corners of the globe, connecting with film festivals from around the world, to bring together the finest animated content on the planet. After vetting hours upon hours of film, our Festival Jury members, comprised of independent creators, directors, studio executives, educators, and industry leaders, have selected the finest and latest features and shorts in the world of animation.

From independent animation to special premieres, CG to stop-motion, the Jury’s 2018 selections cover the full spectrum, ranging from the roots of the medium, to films created with the advanced technologies now available to studios and independent filmmakers. There is something in this year’s schedule for every fan of film, animation, and powerful storytelling.

Catch a film for a cause

All proceeds from this year’s film festival (except PayPal fees & GST) will be donated to Covenant House Vancouver.

SPARK CG is proud to support Covenant House Vancouver in their effort to help the more than 1,400 homeless and at-risk youth, aged 16 to 24, who will reach out to them for help this year.

Since 1997, Covenant House Vancouver has been helping youth to get off Vancouver’s streets. They do this through a carefully designed Continuum of Care, which includes a daily drop-in, a 54-bed residential crisis program, a transitional living program, relapse prevention, and life-skills training.

Join us as we honour animation in all its forms and styles by unveiling the very best animated films as selected by our Festival Jury. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience the best the animation industry has to offer while also helping a great cause!

For the third year, we are pleased to announce that we have once again partnered with Covenant House Vancouver. All box office proceeds from each and every festival screening (including this one!) will be donated to Covenant House to aid them in their great cause of providing support to at-risk and street youth in Downtown Vancouver.

In addition to the award-winning films, the SPARK ANIMATION Festival will be presenting Mr. Nick Park with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Warsaw, 1975. Kapuscinski (43) is a brilliant veteran journalist, an idealist and a friend of lost causes and revolutions.

At the Polish Press Agency, he convinces his boss to send him to Angola where a bloody civil war has broken out on the eve of the country’s independence. He embarks on a seemingly suicidal road trip into the heart of the civil war. There, he witnesses once again the dirty reality of war and discovers a sense of helplessness previously unknown to him. Angola will change him forever: it was a reporter that left Poland, but it was a writer that returned.

Based upon the book "Another Day of Life" by Ryszard Kapuscinski.

Based on classic Persian literature, The Shahnameh by Ferdowsi (The Book of Kings) the film follows upstart ruler Zahak’s treacherous rise to the thrown in Jamkard (ancient Persia) and naïve Afaridoun, the young hero who will save the kingdom and people from the darkness. Zahak, who made a Faustian pack control the thrown is now haunted by his evil deeds. His recent nightmares and now a told prophecy of how a young man he wronged in the past will rise up against him has him worried and unstable, jeopardizing everything. However, Afaridoun must first conquer his own inner demons before he can battle Zahak’s dark forces to be the hero of Jamkard and restore peace to the kingdom and fulfill the prophecy. Ancient Persian mythology that unveils human nature.

Kanini & Kanino from Academy Award®-nominated director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Arrietty, When Marnie Was There, Mary & the Witch’s Flower).
A beautiful sparkling current. In its depths live peacefully the freshwater crab brothers Kanini and Kanino. One stormy day, the younger brother Kanino disobeys, and jumps into a river. His father and older brother Kanino rush to save him, and just as Kanino succeeds, a big air bubble carries Father far, far down the river.

Life Ain’t Gonna Lose from director Yoshiyuki Momose (lead animation director on films by Isao Takahata).
Eight-year-old Shun, a boy living in Tokyo, has suffered since birth with an extremely severe allergy to eggs. Even the slightest contact with an egg will trigger anaphylactic shock. He can’t eat the school’s lunches, or even his birthday cake. And should something happen on a school nature trip... it could never be undone.

Invisible from director Akihiko Yamashita (lead animator on films by Hayao Miyazaki).
A young man lives alone in a rundown apartment. He puts on a dress shirt and his glasses, then a coat and muffler to shield him from the winter, leaving home as usual. But something is not quite right. Ah... he is an invisible man.
