From the producers of the Academy Award-nominated Persepolis and the mind of renowned graphic novelist Jacques Tardi comes a riveting sci-fi adventure set in an alternate steampunk universe.

Paris, 1941. A family of scientists is on the brink of discovering a powerful longevity serum when all of a sudden a mysterious force abducts them, leaving their young daughter April behind. Ten years later, April lives alone with her dear cat, Darwin, and carries on her family’s research in secret. But she soon finds herself at the centre of a shadowy and far-reaching conspiracy, and on the run from government agents, bicycle-powered dirigibles and cyborg rat spies. Undaunted, she continues her quest to find her parents and discover the truth behind their disappearance.

Preceded by My Heart Attack
The true story of a “nice Jewish boy with Buddhist inclinations” who suffers a heart attack, Sheldon Cohen’s film is a beautiful mix of documentary and animation.

Late Night Snacks

VENUE:
VIFF Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St. (@ Davie)

It’s almost 11 pm and WHAM! It hits you: An insidious, appalling and almost irresistible craving for a late night snack. Late-night snacks tend to be hidden snacks, stolen morsels — the kind of stealth feasts that leave one steeped in shameful self-loathing and neurotic denial. “I'm just having a little bedtime snack,” we say to ourselves. Be warned; this edgy collection of animated shorts is for those late-nighters looking to satisfy a hungry craving.

He builds a new Rome—The Land of the Gods—around Asterix’ village, pressuring the Gauls to assimilate or vanish. Despite Asterix and Obelix’ plans to stop the construction work, the buildings quickly rise and the Roman citizens start to peacefully invade their surroundings, bringing chaos to Asterix’ village. Kenji is a teenage math prodigy recruited by his secret crush Natsuki for the ultimate summer job — passing himself off as Natsuki’s boyfriend for four days during her grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration. But when Kenji solves a 2,056 digit math riddle sent to his cell phone, he unwittingly breaches the security barricade protecting Oz, a globe-spanning virtual world where millions of people and governments interact through their avatars, handling everything from online shopping and traffic control to national defense and nuclear launch codes. Now a malicious AI program called the Love Machine is hijacking Oz accounts, growing exponentially more powerful and sowing chaos and destruction in its wake.

This intriguingly intelligent cyberpunk/sci-fi story is a visual tour-de-force, with the amazing world of Oz as the highlight. Like the Internet as conceived by pop artist Takashi Murakami, Oz is a hallucinatory pixel parade of cool avatar designs, kung fu jackrabbits, toothy bears, and a bursting rainbow of colours.
