BIOGRAPHIES
Animation Supervisor // ShadowMachine
(GdT's Pinocchio, Missing Link, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman)
From Denmark, Brian has been animating for over twenty years now. He originally trained as a chef and worked at restaurants in Denmark and France. One day, Brian took a chance and applied to The Animation Workshop in Viborg, Denmark, home to many talented animators, both teachers and students, and so began his second career.
Since then, Brian has worked on TV shows, ads and feature films. Among them: Missing Link, ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, Frankenweenie, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Max & Co, and most recently as the Animation Supervisor on GdT’s Pinocchio.
Brian comments that “My real enjoyment comes from the process of animating, of taking a still object and giving it life. I enjoy the process of performance, being the offscreen actor, bringing the words and action from the script to life. I have been lucky enough to work on some amazing films that have been loved and appreciated by many around the world.”
Born on Long Island, NY, and raised in Silver Spring, MD, David Silverman started drawing at age four, and he’s never found a good reason to stop. Winning various student awards for animation contributed to this inability to stop drawing. And going to the UCLA Animation Workshop didn’t help much in getting him off that drawing habit.
Much of David’s career has revolved around The Simpsons. After graduating from UCLA in 1983, he freelanced illustration and animation until in 1987, he landed a job animating on The Tracey Ullman Show — where The Simpsons began. Animating on all 48 shorts led to directing the first shows of the series. Starting with the Christmas Special in December 1989, and then the premiere episode the following month, he soon became Supervising Animation Director and a producer on the show. All told, he has directed 24 episodes and has won 4 Emmys along the way.
When no one was looking, he snuck away from The Simpsons to work at DreamWorks (The Road to El Dorado as Co-Director), Pixar (Monsters, Inc. as Co-Director), and Blue Sky (Ice Age, Robots – writing and boarding). But, he came back to the show full-time at the end of 2003 and directed The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007.
In 2012, David directed and co-wrote the short film The Longest Daycare, which went on to earn him an Academy Award nomination. Two more Maggie shorts followed, Playdate with Destiny (2020), and The Force Awakens from Its Nap (2021). David continues to direct new Simpsons shorts for Disney+ including The Good, the Bart, and the Loki, Plusaversary, When Billie Met Lisa and Rogue Not Quite One.
In March 2020, David directed the CG-animated feature Extinct or so we’ve been told.
Director of Puppet Fabrication // ShadowMachine
(GdT's Pinocchio, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, Coraline)
Georgina Hayns has been involved in all aspects of puppet fabrication for stop-motion films for over 20 years. Her career began in the UK, working for Cosgrove Hall Films, puppet makers Mackinnon & Saunders and Warner Bros. At Mackinnon and Saunders she was an armaturist and supervisor of children’s television series and commercials, including BBC Television’s Noddy, HIT Entertainment’s Bob the Builder, Lipton® Brisk® Tea and Puffs Tissues. She also worked on animated feature films including Mars Attacks! and shorts including the Academy Award®-nominated Periwig Maker. After working on Corpse Bride, Hayns joined LAIKA in 2006 as head of Puppet Fabrication and was a key contributor to all of LAIKA’s Oscar-nominated films: Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). She is currently the Director of Puppet Fabrication for ShadowMachine, most recently for the Oscar and BAFTA-winning film GdT’s Pinocchio.
