Coraline, Norman, Kubo... over the years LAIKA has created an amazing roster of memorable characters who are difficult, if not impossible, to forget.

On Friday, September 15, join us as we welcome Georgina Hayns, Creative Supervisor of Puppet Fabrication at LAIKA, as she takes us through the collaborative filmmaking process behind each of LAIKA’s four Oscar-nominated features: Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo & the Two Strings with a focus on the fabrication element of the filmmaking.

Georgina will take us through the unique and collaborative filmmaking process behind each of LAIKA’s four Oscar-nominated features: Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014) and Kubo & the Two Strings (2016). With a focus on the fabrication element of these films, Georgina will provide an in-depth look at the Oregon-based animation studio. Production puppets will be on display.

David Burgess

Dave BurgessDave has almost three decades of experience in the animation industry, working on some of the most iconic 2D and CGI animated films of our time. Dave is the Animation Supervisor at Animal Logic’s Vancouver studio, where he was the Animation Director on DC League of Super-Pets and the Animation Supervisor on The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

In 1991, Dave started at Walt Disney Feature Animation, where he was an animator and supervising animator on many of their most successful 2D films, including Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and Tarzan.

In 2001, he switched his pencil for a computer and started at PDI/DreamWorks, working as an animator, supervising animator and head of character animation. His credits during this time include Shrek 2, Madagascar, Over the Hedge, Megamind and Trolls.

Dave graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver with Honours in Animation.

GeorginaGeorgina Hayns has been involved in all aspects of puppet fabrication for stop-motion films for over 20 years. Her career began in the UK, working for Cosgrove Hall Films, puppet makers Mackinnon & Saunders and Warner Bros. At Mackinnon and Saunders she was an armaturist and supervisor of children’s television series and commercials, including BBC Television’s Noddy, HIT Entertainment’s Bob the Builder, Lipton® Brisk® Tea and Puffs Tissues. She also worked on animated feature films including Mars Attacks! and shorts including the Academy Award®-nominated Periwig Maker. After working on Corpse Bride, Hayns joined LAIKA in 2006 as head of Puppet Fabrication and was a key contributor to all of LAIKA’s Oscar-nominated films: Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). She is currently the Director of Puppet Fabrication for ShadowMachine, most recently for the Oscar and BAFTA-winning film GdT’s Pinocchio.
