Festival Update: All About Shorts

SPARK ANIMATION Festival Announces its First Animated Shorts Collection

Pixar, Aardman Animation and The Simpsons. What do they have in common? They all started their successes by presenting shorts on the animation festival circuit. The short film is the genesis of everyone’s career. They are the calling card for the upcoming animator or director. Creating a strong animated short is the easiest way to start out on the festival circuit, prove a concept or get a commercial work. And it’s also the fastest way to see your work on screen and get your name out into the world.

Our jury of animation professionals burned out their eyeballs watching almost 200 film submissions and came up with the very best ones. These selections have been arranged into four categories to be screened on four different nights. Amongst these collections you’ll find the world’s best game cinematics, music videos, commercials, short films, animated by students and professionals alike. Whether it’s a locally produced short, a DIY project by a major studio or a CGI short from overseas, there is something for everyone.

For many of the world’s most respected, talented and imaginative animators, it was the short film format where they grew their reputation and developed their art. The result is that some of the funniest, entertaining, technically groundbreaking animated movies are never seen by the wider Vancouver public—until now.
